Matangi Yantra with Jupiter Mandala

This painting is inspired by the Tantric Goddess Matangi, who is the embodiment of the mastery over the arts and the gaining and expressing  of supreme knowledge. It should inspire, stimulate and stabilize the energetic center of expression, creativity and wisdom through voice and speech – vishuddhi chakra.

Matangi is the ninth object of transcendent knowledge, also known as the ninth Mahavidya (Wisdom Goddesses) and a Tantric representation of Sarasvati, the Goddess of the arts, wisdom and learning. It is said that “each Mahavidya is one facet of a multi-faceted Great Goddess and that each facet contains all the others”. Matangi is a Goddess with many forms and traits. She serves to represent a wide array of people: from the lower-castes, to the hunter tribes, to the arts. She is best known for her unconventional desire for pollution, based on one of her myths of origin. This makes her an exception to many Hindu conventions for worshiping Gods and Goddess as well. Matangi serves as a facet of a larger Great Goddess, while still maintaining unique traits for her devotees to worship.

I have blended her image and yantra with a mandala design made from an ancient number grid named the Vedic square, choosing the number 3, which in the Vedic numerology is connected to the planet Jupiter – the teacher of the Gods and Lord of Speech – expression of wisdom and knowledge. Matangi and Jupiter are attributed to vishuddhi chakra – the throat chakra – the energy center of expression through voice and speech.

During the whole process of creation I have chanted and charged this painting with the Matangi mantra and applied for it the “wash”-technique by the Tantric artist Harish Johari.
